Medical Leave of Absence – How to apply

Short Term and Long Term Medical Disability is available when illness, injury or recovery from surgery keeps SPEEA-represented employees at The Boeing Company away from work for more than one week.

To apply, contact Total Access at 1-866-473-2016 and ask for the Leave of Absence Desk. The desk can provide assistance completing the paperwork to set-up a Medical Leave of Absence.

Short Term Disability coverage can start with the second week of absence from work and is available for up to 6 months (26 weeks) of absence from work. Employees can use sick leave or vacation to cover the first week of absence. Under short term disability, the next 13 weeks are covered at 80% of an employee’s standard pay. Employees can use sick leave or vacation to cover the remaining 20%.

The remaining 12 weeks of Short Term Disability are covered at 60%. Employees with available sick leave and vacation can use the hours to increase their pay during the Medical Leave of Absence to 100% of their standard paycheck.

Medical and dental coverage remains in place for employees and their families during the Medical Leave of Absence.

Employees who are not able to return to work after 6 months and who have been paying for long-term disability insurance coverage, can receive 60% of their standard paycheck under Long Term Disability coverage.

To apply for coverage under Long Term Disability, employees should contact Total Access after about five months of their Medical Leave of Absence. Ask what documentation is needed to transition from Short Term to Long Term Disability coverage. Secure and complete all forms, including documentation from doctors, and submit them to Boeing by the deadlines provided by the Leave of Absence Desk.

Medical coverage continues for the employee during the 24 months that Long Term Disability can be in place. However, premiums are required to continue coverage for other family members. This also applies to dental, accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) and Voluntary Personal Accident (VPA) coverage.
