Our Negotiation Team is making solid progress for our union’s members. Today we want to give some insight into how we intend to approach bargaining with Boeing.
Interest-based bargaining
We are proceeding using what experts call an “interest-based” bargaining approach. This method focuses on joint problem-solving. The two sides work together to identify shared interests and mutual concerns, then work collaboratively toward solutions that benefit everyone.
It’s our belief that starting with interest-based bargaining will set a constructive tone, open the door to meaningful dialogue and help both sides find common ground early in the process. We see this approach as leading to more-durable agreements and a more-respectful, and trusting, working relationship.
Boeing willing to engage
Boeing executives have expressed a willingness to engage on all items of our bargaining platform. They agree that work/life balance, a strong pipeline for technical excellence, and a desire to reward and retain talent are key issues that need solutions that will benefit SPEEA members.
Given that, we are very optimistic about our prospects for securing a fair deal for our union’s members.
Boeing has indicated that it is interested in reaching an agreement well before the Oct 6 deadline. Based on this, we have mutually agreed to begin meeting earlier this summer than we had first anticipated. We will share updates to the timeline soon.
Member engagement critical
Once bargaining starts, member engagement will be even more critical. To secure the best deal possible, we need every member to help us present a unified front. You can support the negotiations team by continuing to wear Red Shirts on Wednesdays, wearing and distributing SPEEA badge backers, displaying desk tents and – this is crucial -- having conversations with your coworkers about what things like work/life balance means to you.
These kinds of visible and collective actions help demonstrate unity and reinforce the actions we are bringing as your representatives at the table.
In solidarity,
Your Negotiation Team
