SEATAC, Wash. – SPEEA Council Reps from three states came together for the annual SPEEA Council Convention and Leadership Conference.
Convention highlights include:
- Wichita Council Rep Angela Hottle received the Stephen Pezzini Helping Other People Excel (HOPE) award for her union activism and community support.
- Collection for SPEEA Cares fund raised about $400
- Council Reps approved motions to publish proposed changes to SPEEA Bylaws
- SPEEA Treasurer Shaunna Winton reported on a new form to help with lunchtime meeting funding and communications for member engagement
- Negotiation Team members and Contract Action Team members reported on their work
Since this is the only time of the year that all Council Reps come together, SPEEA hosts a special meeting for leaders who work in other states to meet with Puget Sound elected officials to discuss issues.
Leadership conference
Members of the SPEEA Leadership Development and Training Committee worked with staff to develop a theme for the Leadership Conference and complementary workshops. With the theme this year of “Ready for Action,” participants could choose three workshops on topics ranging from labor rights, legislative issues and negotiations to empowering leadership development.
Anniversary fun!
To celebrate SPEEA’s 80th anniversary, Christine Watson, our graphic/web designer, put together a memorabilia table with vintage photos, buttons and visibility items. And to kick off the start of the conference, Senior Communications Specialist Bryan Corliss hosted a SPEEA history trivia quiz. Three teams tied for the win with 19 out of 26 questions answered correctly. They each won a copy of “Picket Line,” a book by former SPEEA President Tom McCarty. Look for more photos on SPEEA’s social media and more details are coming in the July Spotlite.
